Global water problem

  • Water is becoming increasingly scarce in many regions of the world. Climate change, population growth and intensive agriculture are increasing the pressure on water resources:
  • Water pollution: Industrial wastewater, agricultural chemicals and household waste pollute rivers, lakes and groundwater. This endangers people’s health and the environment.
  • Inequitable access to water: Millions of people, especially in developing countries, have no access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation.

Need for innovative solutions

In order to solve the global water problem, innovative technologies are needed for the

  • Water treatment: New technologies for cleaning polluted water must be developed to make it usable for human consumption or irrigation.
  • Well regeneration: silted-up or polluted wells must be regenerated to ensure access to groundwater.

Common pollutants

lifetech watersolutions wasser schwermetalle
Heavy metals

Lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and other heavy metals can enter the water from various sources such as industrial waste, mining and agriculture. They can lead to serious health problems such as nerve damage, kidney damage and cancer.

lifetech watersolutions pestizide
Pesticides and herbicides

These chemical pesticides are used in agriculture and can enter the groundwater via the soil and surface water. They can impair fertility, damage the nervous system and be carcinogenic.

lifetech watersolutions nitrat
Nitrate and nitrite

Nitrate and nitrite come mainly from fertilizers and manure from agriculture and can be converted in the body to nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. Nitrate can also impair the oxygen transport capacity of the blood in infants and lead to so-called "blue baby syndrome".

Drug residues

Pharmaceuticals and their degradation products enter water bodies via wastewater and can promote the development of bacterial resistance and have a negative impact on flora and fauna.

lifetech watersolutions mirkoplastik
Microplastics

Small plastic particles from cosmetics, clothing and other products can enter water bodies via wastewater. They can be ingested by fish and other organisms and thus enter the food chain.

lifetech watersolutions Umwelt
Per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFAS)

PFAS are used in various industrial products and can be released into the environment via the air and water. They are persistent, bioaccumulative and can have negative effects on human health, including thyroid function, the immune system and reproductive capacity.

lifetech watersolution Substanzen
Hormonally active substances

These substances can disrupt the hormonal balance in the body and have negative effects on fertility, child development and the risk of cancer.

Effects on the environment

Pollutants in water can have a severe impact on flora and fauna. They can lead to the death of fish, the extinction of species and the impairment of ecosystems. Many diseases worldwide could either be greatly reduced or completely eliminated by a supply of clean water.
